What's Your Beef?...

Roper went to a Windycon meeting tonight. Just to get the girls out of the house I piled them in the van and we went to Portillo's to pick up dinner. Portillo's started as a hot dog stand, but they feature Italian Beef. This seems to be a Chicago thing, thinly sliced beef simmered in garlic, peppers and onions and served on french rolls with the au jus.
It got me thinking. Last week poltr1 wrote about beef on weck, Buffalo's beef sandwich. Everybody's heard of the Philly cheese steak.

So, what other sliced beef sandwiches should I know about?

I took the TAFF delegate to Portillo's tonight and we got beefs. We also discussed the sliced beef sandwich that we had up in Montreal...Smoke meat. Imagine corned beef or pastrami that is less spiced and smoked rather than brined and you get the idea.

Yes, we had some of that in Montreal when we went to see an Expos game.
It was odd.
Good, but odd.

Italian beef sounds yummy. I should try it the next time I'm in Chicago. (And when I do go, I should give you a heads-up.)

I'm not aware of anything of that type here. We had a place, for a short time, where we could get an Italian Beef. Sure miss them!

Well, there is the original French Dip, but it is rarely done right.

But speaking of smoked meat - when we were @ Anticipation we had a pizza made with pepperoni, Italian sausage and smoked meat. Awesome!
