Why Is That?

I have lived my entire life, except for 4 years at college, within a 10 mi radius circle centered on O'Hare Airport.
So why am I drawn to and touched by songs that express a longing for home from places far away?
Songs like that can bring me to tears for no reason I can isolate.
The latest one is "Mersey Lullaby" off the Blue Moo album by Sandra Boynton and Michael Ford. Yeah, a kids album. Most of it is silly, but this song is quiet and sweet and has made me cry every time I play the thing.
On the whole, the album is a hoot and the accompanying book is wonderfully silly as usual with Boynton's work.

Katie really likes the "Gorilla Song", but I keep going back to "Mersey Lullaby".

When we watch the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness, I always get teary at My Old Kentucky Home and Maryland My Maryland. Though we lved in Louisville for ten years I don't think of either of those places as home. As I get older I'm even more susceptible to sentimental things, especially if they have genuine nostaglia value. It reminds me of The Hornblower Companion, in which Forrester described the circumstances of the writing of each of the Hornblower novels; including several instances from the early novels' composition of averring from being sentimental in his writing, which aversion he questions at the time of the composition of the Companion.

We love Sandra Boynton. I think we have all her books, we have Philadelphia Chicken. I didn't know she had another collection of songs, so thanks!

Sometimes the longing is for a time past, or for something that you haven't managed to create in your home yet. Lacey's Kitchen always makes me cry because I have not managed to make my home into a place like that; I don't even know if I'm suited to hosting such a place, but I really want it to be part of my home.
