The Song Letter Meme

This is a twist on the Letter Meme. Instead of coming up with ten items for a certain letter, you come up with five song titles for a certain letter and explain why you picked them. If interested then leave a comment. I'll give you a letter. You post this blurb in your journal along with your list.

So filkerdave gave me the letter "I".

I'll have to admit, "I" was hard. I ran through my mental list of favorite songs and artists and came up blank.
So I just started listening to my mental soundtrack and filled the list in short order.
I confess that I had to go trolling on google to find some of the composers and artists, but I don't think that is cheating.

Th first one to pop into my head was "I Confess" by the New Colony Six.
They were a Chicago based harmony band that achieved modest success on the national charts in the mid-sixties.
I especially like the way this one starts out almost as a chant and breaks into a lovely multipart on the choruses.

"Incense and Peppermints" by the Strawberry Alarmclock arrived next. It is a one hit wonder from 1967, one of the all time great psychedelic lyrics in a nice harmony setting. I have no clue what it means, but it is nice to listen to.

Like I said, I like harmony. One of the smoothest, sweetest of the do-wop standards is "In the Still of the Night" written by Fred Parris and recorded by The Five Satins in the mid- 50's
Give a listen here

I am a Parrot Head. I would have been remiss in not including a Jimmy Buffett song.
"I Will Play for Gumbo" is the best song on the Beachhouse on the Moon album from 1999. It's not what you would call his strongest album, but "Gumbo" is a bright bouncy paean to one of his favorite foods. (It's a little like religion and a lot like sex...)

Lastly, I have to include one of Roper's songs. He only has three that start with "I" so I took the most unusual. How many bouncy pop tunes are there out there that are based in Shakespeare? You can check out the lyrics at

So, now, you ask me for a letter and get extra points if you pick harmony songs.
