There are days that I love my job and there are days that I hate it. Today I was two for two.
First the love part. We got an e-mail today from the information security department. They are running a song-writing contest. They are looking for the best information security song. Yes, the aim is to make the information security policy rhyme and scan to the tune of Camp Grenada. The winner gets $75.00 and the song gets posted on the intranet. A cute way to get people thinking about the subject. We had a very silly afternoon working on our song. Greg, the manager, wants to rhyme virus and colitis. Like I said, really silly.

Now, the hate part. Our area manager, Steve, was at the weekly upper-level-management meeting. He calls it the "Come to Jesus" meeting. Basically every Wednesday afternoon the "Head of Retail for the Chicago Region" reams the area managers for not meeting their sales goals. So Steve comes back to the branch and has a "talk" with Greg, the branch manager. Then Greg looks all sad and puppydog-eyed and reminds us of what we are supposed to be doing. Selling.
Yeah, right. I have a stack of paper on my desk, literally six inches high. All stuff I have to deal with some how. Yet, when I don't have a customer at my desk I'm supposed to be calling the customers and selling them on some product or service they don't yet have. I understand the need for growth. I understand the need for sales. It's hard for me as I am a Customer Service rep, not a salesman, but I do understand. But they are not providing us with the support we need to sell effectively.
What kind of support, you ask. How 'bout advertising to get some fresh bodies into our lobby? Nope, don't have any of that. How 'bout interest rates at least on par with the local competition? Only sort of, and you have to have a checking relationship to get the good rates.
How bout training, so you can explain the benefits on a Home Equity line of credit without sounding like an idiot? Nope. I only manage to get along because I had mortgage school two ownerships ago.

Then there is the alarm system. I was supposed to close tonight, but Haren, the teller supervisor told me to go home since he couldn't leave 'till his wife picked him up ay 6:00. I went home and started dinner. Shortly after six the phone rang. It was the alarm company, the vault motion detector was tripped. They said they were sending the police. I tried calling the branch and got no answer. I figured that Haren was out talking to the police. Shortly there after Greg called me. He wanted me to go check things out. Since it was the vault room, a duel control area, he had to find a teller to meet me there with the other key. we went in. nothing was moving. The fan was not on. nothing was out of place. We locked it back up and set the alarm again.
Yup, you guessed it. It tripped again. This time I told them not to call the cops as we were there and there were no burgelers. We checked the vault room again and called the alarm company back. They walked me through bypassing a zone and we schedualed a service call for tomorrow. This will be the second time they have had to service the motion detector in the vault room.
Luckily I made it home before the roast burned. And Roper was kind enough to make the potatoes.

Can I quit now?

Er ... Please do keep in mind that bitching about your job in public may result in a solution which you didn't want. Friends-only security is often considered a good idea for posts such as these.

It did cross my mind. But I didn't say anything that I haven't said to Steve and Greg. I suspect anyone higher up the chain has no clue who I am.
