The Question For Today...

Checking in from laundry land today, and my question is
I just put away a load of kid clothes and I have a drawer full of singletons.
Julie is young enough she can (and does) wear mismatched socks, but Katie is a fashion girl and takes offense at the notion.

Miriam *likes* wearing mismatched socks. Takes quite a lot of pride in it. :)

Silly answer: The spinning of the washer opens a vortex to a universe in which darned apparel is the primary sentient species.

More serious answer: socks have a tendency to flip over the barrel of the washer during the spin cycle, causing socks to get lost between the cylinder and the body of the washer. There is a slight chance of socks getting caught on the motor mechanism.

The middle-schoolers consider mimatched socks a fashion statement. In fact, you can even buy a package of appropriately mismatched socks at Justice (one of the tweener cool stores).

I often find socks inside shirts or knit pants. Or alongside/underneath where the laundry basket goes, or between (or underneath) the washer & dryer, or on the floor in the corner of the laundry room. Socks are small, kid socks even moreso, and hide in all sorts of interesting places. (Our cats will sometimes "hunt" socks as well, but your cats are older -- they may not.)

The eater-of-socks ate them, of course.

I have a "guy-like" approach to the problem: buy six pairs of identical monochromatic socks whenever I need some. I doubt this would appeal to anyone with any fashion sense whatsoever, especially a child. :-)

The Sock Mobster grabbed them.

(Imagine a trenchcoated guy dancing around a laundry room swiping socks, to the tune of a certain B52's hit. It was a skit I remember seeing in college...)

According to Rich Hall and "Not Necessarily the News" they go to the Hozone.

Silly...they transmute into wire coat hangers when you're not looking.

Here in the Kalamazoo, MI, area some stores are marketing a brand of mismatched, but co-ordinating socks as "Little Miss-Matched". (I believe that's the name.) The socks are a co-ordinating color but one has stripes and the other has polka-dots, for example.
And, usually very early in the morning (or very late at night) in a filk room somewhere are songs about where all those socks have gone. And they are probably where my memory has gone at that hour-far, far away.
