Seen that too often. I just had a 10YO cry because the toasted cheese sandwich was too toasty.

A) So put them back down. Reward the behavior you want. I mean, that's what *they* are doing: They stop crying when you do what they command.

B) Get used to this. Get used to them trying out other techniques to get what they want, as they start to learn that crying isn't the "Magic bullet" it has been up to now.

Solution: Figure out what they *want*, and use it against them. If they want the thing, they have to behave the way you want them to behave.

It's a pain, but has to be done. You have to be in charge, because you're the grownup. They get to be The Grownup when they move out on their own; that's the major perk of moving out, after all.
